Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training progra in masonry.
Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a professional mason or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years.
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia Commercial Driver's License issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this class.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.
Ability to distinguish basic colors for safety identification.
This is a highly skilled and technical construction, maintenance and repair masonry work. Employees are respons i ble for the repairing, altering and constructing exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, concrete, stone and tile.
Employees are assigned elementary masonry work in WMATA facilities. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and to develop skills for construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of interior and exterior brick, tile or cement surfaces. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is reviewed and verified upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Supervisor, Craft Crew.
Plans and lays out the maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of exterior and interior masonry surfaces.
Lays common and face brick, fire brick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra-cotta, ceramic and quarry tile and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls , walks, chimneys, manholes, boilers, catch basins, etc.
Mixes, pours, spreads, levels and finishes cement and concrete in the construction surface and structures such as sidewalks, curbs, walls, stairs, and ramps.
Prepares sub-surfaces by leveling ground and tamping fill materials such as sand, dirt and gravel for the construction and repair of walls, walkways, patios, floors, and foundations.
Assembles and lays out metal forms and fabricates wooden forms; selects and installs reinforcing steel or wire to obtain desired strength in the concrete or cement to be poured.
Shapes and cuts brick, stone and tile in the construction or repair of corners, windows, doors, patios, floors and walkways.
Spreads concrete base using serrated spreader and levels it with contoured screed; uses trowel to position and tap tiles into place.
Sandblasts re-point masonry joints to existing masonry structure requiring repair.
Performs site layout work and placement of footing in preparation for construction of masonry surfaces.
Uses floats, edgers, trowling machines, abrasive and other finishing tools in performing finishing and in shaping curbs and drains to proper grade and contour.
Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists co-workers in higher level positions in their assignments or provide s job specific training to co-workers in lower classifications.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies or incidents such as emergency snow removal.
Performs all tasks and assignments within the established saftety practices and maintenance guidelines.
May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.
Work variable shifts, days and nights as required and as provided under existing Union contract.
Performs all other related duties as required.
